What happens during Leap 6?
Sorting objects, sounds and situations into groups — the groundwork for language. They notice that all dogs bark, all bowls hold food, all hands have fingers.
Development Milestones in this Leap
Pulls self up to stand
The infant uses stable furniture or an adult's hands to pull their body upward from a sitting or kneeling position into a standing posture. This activity builds immense lower body strength, particularly in the quadriceps and gluteal muscles, while promoting ankle stability. It is a critical milestone on the path to independent walking.
Motor – GrossCruises along furniture
The infant takes sideways steps to move along the length of a couch, low table, or play yard while holding on with one or both hands (cruising). This movement strengthens the lateral hip stabilizers, develops balance during weight shifting, and enhances spatial awareness. It is the final milestone before independent walking.
Boundary Stone9 Months Social: Stranger Anxiety
The infant demonstrates a clear physical and emotional distinction between familiar caregivers and unfamiliar persons (stranger anxiety), confirming healthy social-cognitive categorization and secure psychological attachment.
TeethLower Central Incisors Eruption
The first primary teeth (lower central incisors) erupt through the bottom gums. This marks the physical start of teething, which supports the transition to textured foods and early speech mechanics.
TeethFirst Brushing & First Dental Visit
Initiate twice-daily brushing as soon as the first tooth erupts, and book the preventative dental screening at the dentist's office to monitor early oral health.
TeethUpper Central Incisors Eruption
The upper central incisors erupt through the top gums, providing central biting capabilities and enabling the baby to bite and cut soft foods.
NutritionThird Solid Meal: Cereal-Fruit Puree
Introduce the third weaning meal in the afternoon, combining iron-rich baby cereal and Vitamin C-rich fruit purée without milk to optimize non-heme iron absorption.
NutritionHydration Integration & Open Cup Drinking
Introduce plain tap water or low-mineral bottled water from an open cup once all three purées have been successfully introduced.
Recommended Play & Activities for Leap 6
Trip to the Lake
A calm outing to the water — new sights, sounds, and fresh air for the whole family.
AdventureStroller Walk in the Park
A simple walk outdoors is one of the most valuable excursions at any age. For a newborn, fresh air, dappled light, and the gentle motion of the stroller are soothing and stimulating in equal measure. As your baby grows, the same walk becomes a rich feed of new sights and sounds — rustling leaves, passing dogs, birdsong — that you can name to build vocabulary and attention. Daylight exposure also helps regulate sleep rhythms.
AdventureFarmers' Market Visit
A market is a feast for the senses: bright colours, new smells, busy sounds, and friendly faces. Carrying or walking your baby through the stalls exposes them to a rich, real-world environment far more varied than home. Letting an older baby touch a smooth apple or smell a bunch of herbs links words to direct sensory experience and builds comfort with new people and places.
AdventureLibrary Story Time
Many libraries run free story-and-song sessions for babies and toddlers, and they are a wonderful early introduction to books, rhythm, and being part of a group. Hearing stories read aloud, joining in with songs, and seeing other children all support language, listening, and social development — and there is no pressure to be perfectly quiet.
AdventureTrip to the Duck Pond
A pond or lake offers calm water, gentle ripples, and the irresistible draw of ducks and birds. Watching the movement of the water and the animals develops visual tracking and attention, while the outing itself is a soothing change of scene. Naming the animals and their sounds — 'quack quack!' — turns watching into a language game.
AdventureAquarium Visit
An aquarium is a magical, low-light world of slow, gliding movement that captivates babies and toddlers alike. The drifting fish are perfect for practising visual tracking, while the depth and movement of the tanks engage developing depth perception. Older toddlers can point to and name the creatures, building vocabulary and joint attention.
