About this play
Around three to four months, babies begin to connect what they see with what their hands can do. Dangling a toy within arm's reach above your baby invites them to swing, bat, and eventually grab it — a huge cognitive leap that links vision, intention, and movement. Each successful swipe teaches cause and effect and refines the hand-eye coordination that underpins all later fine-motor skills.
How to do it (Step by step)
- Lay baby under a play gym or hold a toy within reach.
- Encourage them to swat at the dangling toy.
- Cheer each touch; lower the toy so they can grasp it.
