About this play
Long before babies can speak, they learn the rhythm of conversation. When you talk to your baby in the sing-song, high-pitched voice known as 'parentese', then pause to let them coo or gurgle back, you are teaching turn-taking — the basic structure of every dialogue. Responding warmly to their sounds tells your baby that their voice has power and meaning, which fuels both language development and emotional security.
How to do it (Step by step)
- Speak slowly and warmly, drawing out your vowels.
- Pause after speaking to give baby a turn to 'reply'.
- Copy the sounds they make back to them.
