Climbs stairs on hands and knees
Typical Timing & Development Window
Visual Timeline & Milestone Benchmarks
What these numbers mean
The average age babies first begin showing early signs of this skill. Before this, it's simply too early โ there's nothing to worry about.
The midpoint age: half of babies have reached this milestone by here, half a little later. It's a typical target, not a deadline.
How spread out the timing is. About two-thirds of babies achieve it within one standard deviation of the median (the shaded band, wk 52โ60). Wide bands mean a normal range of variation.
A gentle check-in point. If your baby hasn't shown this by around here, it can be worth mentioning to your pediatrician โ most often it's still perfectly fine, just later.
About this milestone
The toddler navigates up a flight of stairs using a quadrupedal (hands and knees) crawling pattern. This marks the onset of vertical spatial navigation and requires strong reciprocal limb coordination and depth boundary management.
- 1. Practice climbing up carpeted stairs with a caregiver positioned directly behind the toddler at arm's reach.
- 2. Use firm foam indoor climbing blocks to practice safe stepping and ascending mechanics in a play environment.
- 3. Teach the toddler how to turn around and slide down stairs safely on their belly, feet first.
- 1. Never leave stairs un-gated or allow unsupervised access to stairwells, even if the toddler is an expert climber.
- 2. Avoid carrying the toddler up every incline; allow them to tackle safe, small steps under close supervision.
