About this play

In the first weeks of life, a baby's vision is still developing and they see bold contrast far better than subtle colour. Black-and-white patterns — stripes, spirals, simple faces — are visually 'loud' and grab their attention, giving the eyes and the visual centres of the brain valuable exercise. Slowly moving a high-contrast card from side to side encourages your baby to fix their gaze and then track a moving object, an essential early visual skill.

How to do it (Step by step)
  • Hold a black-and-white card ~25 cm from baby's eyes.
  • Once they lock on, move it slowly left and right.
  • Watch for their eyes following — rest when they look away.

Every milestone, beautifully remembered.

Track your baby’s complete development journey, discover daily age-perfect activities, log WHO growth charts, and securely share memories with your whole family.
