Registers and signals elimination awareness
Typical Timing & Development Window

What these numbers mean
The average age babies first begin showing early signs of this skill. Before this, it's simply too early — there's nothing to worry about.
The midpoint age: half of babies have reached this milestone by here, half a little later. It's a typical target, not a deadline.
How spread out the timing is. About two-thirds of babies achieve it within one standard deviation of the median (the shaded band, wk 66–78). Wide bands mean a normal range of variation.
A gentle check-in point. If your baby hasn't shown this by around here, it can be worth mentioning to your pediatrician — most often it's still perfectly fine, just later.
About this milestone
The toddler registers internal somatosensory signals indicating a full or soiled diaper and communicates this discomfort via specific gestures, vocal lines, or by pointing directly at the diaper.
- 1. Connect descriptive vocabulary items ('wet', 'dirty', 'poop') directly to the physical state during changing tasks.
- 2. Change diaper states promptly upon filling to maintain their baseline sensory preference for clean, dry skin frameworks.
- 3. Acknowledge and praise any spontaneous, self-initiated gestures that point out a full diaper.
- 1. Avoid shaming, scolding, or reacting with disgust to dirty diapers, which can foster negative associations with elimination.
- 2. Do not force immediate, strict toilet training protocols if the child simply signals the state without showing functional control indicators.
