Typical Timing & Development Window
Visual Timeline & Milestone Benchmarks
What these numbers mean
The average age babies first begin showing early signs of this skill. Before this, it's simply too early โ there's nothing to worry about.
The midpoint age: half of babies have reached this milestone by here, half a little later. It's a typical target, not a deadline.
How spread out the timing is. About two-thirds of babies achieve it within one standard deviation of the median (the shaded band, wk 55โ65). Wide bands mean a normal range of variation.
A gentle check-in point. If your baby hasn't shown this by around here, it can be worth mentioning to your pediatrician โ most often it's still perfectly fine, just later.
About this milestone
The toddler transitions to a mature, circular, and grinding jaw movement pattern. This integrated mechanical shift allows the safe and effective breakdown of dense, fibrous table foods such as meats and raw vegetables.
- 1. Transition to normal family table foods cut into small, manageable, bite-sized strips.
- 2. Include varied structural food resistance, such as lightly steamed broccoli or soft cooked meat strips.
- 3. Eat alongside the toddler to showcase mature chewing, grinding, and oral clearing patterns.
- 1. Avoid relying permanently on soft pouch mixtures, which limit the jaw muscle training required for mature speech and chewing.
- 2. Do not offer highly dangerous round, firm shapes (e.g., whole grapes, hot dogs) that bypass grinding mechanics and pose choking hazards.
