About this play
Babies are fascinated by the 'other baby' in the mirror long before they understand it is their own reflection. Mirror play during tummy time or sitting encourages head-lifting, self-discovery, and visual attention. Pointing to features — 'There's your nose! There are your eyes!' — lays the groundwork for body awareness and, later, self-recognition.
How to do it (Step by step)
- Prop a baby-safe mirror in front of them.
- Point to and name the reflection's features.
- Wave and smile, and watch them react to the 'friend'.
