About this music
John Philip Sousa (1854–1932) was an American composer nicknamed 'The March King.' He wrote 136 marches, including The Stars and Stripes Forever — the official National March of the United States. Marching music has a history stretching back to ancient military drumming: its steady beat helped soldiers move in unison and kept morale high. For babies and toddlers, a strong march pulse is one of the easiest rhythms to feel and respond to. The predictable beat builds an early sense of musical timing.
- March around the room together, lifting knees high.
- Clap or tap the main beat with your baby.
- Salute on the big moments in the melody.
