About this music

Hip hop was born in the South Bronx, New York City, in the early 1970s, created by African-American and Latino youth as a cultural movement encompassing DJing, MCing (rapping), breakdancing, and graffiti art. DJ Kool Herc is credited with the founding innovation: isolating and looping the rhythmic 'break' section of funk and soul records. Hip hop's rhythmic backbone — the beat — is one of the most sophisticated and varied in popular music, drawing on African drumming traditions, jazz, funk, and electronic music. Exposing children to hip hop early builds rhythmic sensitivity and an ear for complex percussion.

How to do it (Step by step)
  • Nod your head and bounce with the beat.
  • Try simple beatboxing: 'boots and cats and boots and cats…'
  • Tap different body parts on different beats — hands, knees, feet.

Every milestone, beautifully remembered.
