About this music
Flamenco is an art form from the Andalusia region of southern Spain, with roots in the musical cultures of the Roma, Moorish, and Spanish peoples. It encompasses singing (cante), guitar playing (toque), dance (baile), and rhythmic hand-clapping (palmas). UNESCO recognised flamenco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. The music is built on complex rhythmic cycles called compás — some with 12 beats subdivided in asymmetric patterns — and is characterised by passionate, intense expression. Even very young children respond to flamenco's dramatic guitar and driving percussion.
How to do it (Step by step)
- Clap the strong beats of the rhythm with your baby.
- Stamp your feet on the floor like a flamenco dancer.
- Wiggle your fingers down like falling rain — a classic flamenco hand gesture.
